With a population of 1,547,085 Chiang Mai is one of Thailand's largest provinces. Of the above number,170,348 are currently living in Chiang Mai's city area with the rest distributed throughout Chiang Mai's 21 Districts, 2 Sub-destricts. 80% of the people in Chiang Mai are locals by birth. The remaining 20% is made up of Thai nationals and foreigners who have moved to ChiangMai to work, Study, or retire.
The people of ChiangMai have their own lilting dialect,their own customs, their own architectural traditions, a wide range of indigenous handicrafts,their own dances and cuisine. As countless travelers have discovered, ChiangMai's manifold attraction enthrall delight, and to visit this northern Shangri-La merely once is to remain forever enchanted. There re many hilltribe people living in the mountainous districts surrounding ChiangMai such as Omkoi, Mae Jam,Chiang Dao, and Mae ai.
Statistics reported by the Tribal Research Institute of ChiangMai Stated that in the year 1992 there were 1,049 hilltribe villages in the ChiangMai province, constituting a total of 74,195 people. Of this amount, 106,116 were from the Karen tribe 27,392 from the Lahu(Musur)tribe 17,198 from the Hmong(Meo) tribe, 10,873 from the Lisu Tribe 8,862 from the lua tribe , 2,609 form the Akha tribe, 1,145 from the Mien(yao) tribe, and 485 from the Palong tribe. The hilltribe people are agricultural ; planting fields, raising animals, and hunting for a living. Since each tribe has its own culture and language, they blanket the hills of ChiangMai with an interesting patchwork quilt of diverse variety.
Climate Cool Season:(late October to end of February). average temperature 21C and much cooler at night.The oldest months are Decemberand January.Hot Season :(early March to end of May) Average temperature 29.9c. The hottest month is April. Rainy season:(early June to end of October). Average temperature 25.5C. The Wettest month is September.
Phu Phing Palace
The palace is located about 4 kilometers further from Doi Suthep. The palace is open to the public when the royal family does not reside there, this Thai style residense of the royal family is surrounded with the most beautiful garden with a variety of colored flowers. Khru Ba Si Wichai Monument is located near Huay Kaew Falls about 7 Kilometers from the township. The monument was built to commemorate Khru Ba Si Wichai, a popular monk who led volunteers to build the first manmade road up the hill to Phrathat Doi Suthep temple.
Shthep mountainous area beyond Hauy Keaw Rd. With an exquisite location amongst the peaks of Suthep mountain, Visitor can experience a spectacular panoramic view of the city of ChiangMai and Ping river valley. The site was selected by sending an elephant to wander on the mountain.When the elephant found the spot, it circled three times, trumpeted, and knelt down where the temple is located. Nowadays, the temple is symbol of ChiangMai.
Is about 2 kilometers from the palace. The area is called Doi Pui. This Meo hill tribe formerly grew opium for their living. This group is the first who began to grow marketable farm crops with the supports of the government.

Elephant Trainings camp
The centre is located about 30 km from town, about 10 km along the Mae Rim-Samoeng route. Every morning between 09:00 and 11:00 the trained pachyderns show off their forestry skills which were once so highly vauled. Visitors are given the chance to traverse through the jungle on the massive beats, for about 2 hours, after the show has finished. Entrance to the camp is 100 Baht. With the jungle tour 500 Baht per person.

Elephant Riding
This activity is available at most elephant camps around ChiangMai. Most camps provide elephant shows and elephant riding. You can contact either the camp directly or travel agents for more information.

Rafting
Many elephant camps also provide bamboo rafting. However, if you want more challenging raft, Pai and Mae Chaem districts also provide a veteran raft.

Wiang Khum Khan
The ruins of this former Mon city is located about 5 Km Soutth of ChiangMai.The city was established around the 12th and 13th centyries, before being abandoned in the 18th century. Archaeologists have been painstakingly uncovering the past of this site, which covers about 9 sq km and contains the ruins of more than 20 wats.The most complete of all the ruins is that of Wat Chang Kham,or as it was known in the Mon language,Wat kan thom.The most notable of the ruins is the wat chedi Si Liam,a stepped-pyramid which shows the distinct and unique style of mon architecture. The most important discovery by archaeologists was an inscribed stone slab,which has cast doubts over the previous assumption that the Thai script was compiled by King Ramkamkaeng.

Thaton
The scenic town of thaton is situated in Mae-Ai District of Chiang Mai Province, Close to the border with Myanmar. Thaton lies on the Mae Kok,Set in the fertile Fang Valley.The area offers plenty of trekking and cycling opportunities for visitors to enjoy. The mighty Mae Kok river itself is a great source of adventure for everybody to enjoy: from white water rafting in the rainy season to more leisurely paced drifting during the dry months.Accommodation at thaton is not restricted to,but consists mainly of bamboo house-boats.Many of these offer three day river trips along the Mae Kok,visting hill-tribe villages and hot springs, before arriving in ChiangRai.

Fang Hot Spring
Is located in Fang district, 63 Kilometers north of Chiang Mai. There are about 50 hot springs.Three of them are boiling continuously and water is hot enough to boil eggs. Sang Kamphaeng Hot Spring Is located 23 kilometers from san Kamphaeng district.The spring is among the beautiful scenery of the green mountain ranges and trees.Soaking in the hot mineral water is considered to be good for your health.

Chiang Mai Zoological Park
Is located near ChiangMai University.The zoo is the largest zoo in Thailand.It contains Over 500 animals Housed in pens set among the attractive landscaped grounds.Just before the entrance to the zoo in Huay Kaeo Arvoretum is an attractively landscaped garden which has many kinds of trees and flowers. Not far from here is the delightful Huay Kaew Falls Which is an ideal place for picnics.

Doi Inthanon National Park
Doi Inthanon is the highest mountain in Thailand, 2,599 meters above sea level. The foothill of Doi Inthanon is about 70 Kilometers south of ChiangMai. On the way up the mountain are the popular Mae Klang Waterfalls, a favorite picnic spot of ChiangMai.Doi Inthanon is in the area of three districts.Chom Thong, Mae Cham and Sun Patong, Which covers 1,005 Square kilometers.On the road up to Doi Inthanon There are many look-out spots with beautiful views.

Doi Ang Khang
Is located about 13 Kilometers from the city of ChiangMai on Chiang Mai-Fang Road. It is the demonstration site for the planting of the cool climate vegetables and flowers.The project is under the Patronage of His Majesty the King.

Chiang Dao Cave
The cave is located in chiang Dao District, about 72 Kilometers north of the city of ChiangMai.This complex of interconnecting caves that cut into Doi ChiangDai is located 5km west of Route 107,About 70km north of ChiangMai,Heading towards Thaton and Fang,The caves are believed to stretch for many kilometres into the timestone rock,although only a small part of the complex is possible to explore. They contain many Buddha and hermit images.

Long-Necked Karen
Long-Necked Karen (or Pa Dong Tribe) is a hill-tribe living deep inside myanmar boder with Thailand's Ban Karen. Women of this tribe wear brass rings on their necks and limbs.The number of the rings increases according to their ages. Their should blades are pressed lower while their necks seem to be longer and longer.

Wat Phra Singh
Intersection of Sam Lan and Rajadamnern Rd.This beautiful temple,built in 1,345 by King Pha Yu in order to keep the remains of king kam Fu his father,is located in the heart of the city.A tall concrete-base with a wooden structure of the scriptural repository were designed to keep and protect sacred tests written on plam leaves and the delicate Saa paper khown as mulberry paper. Moreover, Wat Phra Singh is one of ChiangMai's center points of SongKran festivities on April'13~15 when people bathe the resered Phra Singh Buddha image, Located in Lai Kham Chapel where woodcarvings and northern-style murals have been found.The Lai Kharm chapel is located behind the main chapel. Wat Suan Dok Opposites the Faculty of Dentistry on Suthep Rd. In 1,383, this exquisite temple was constructed in the pleasure gardens of Lana Royal Residence.

Therefore, Several white chedis,Pagoda,Contain ashes of Chiang Mai's former royal family. The 500 year old bronze Buddha image, One of Thailand's largest images, is located in a secondary chapel.

Wat Chedi-Luang
Phra Pok Klao Rd. With an extensive pagoda, Wat Chedi Luang once housed the revered Emerald Buddha image now enshrined in Thailand's Famous temple, Wat Phra Kaeo in Bangkok. Wat Chedi Luang which means "Big Pagoda"in the northern dialect, was constructed in 1401 by King Muang Ma and the chedi was enlarged bu king tilo Garaj in 1454. The ruin pagoda, Partially destroyed by the great arthquake in 1545, Was renovated as its original in 1992. Also, a magnigicent Naga staircase of the chapel's front porch is attractive.

Wat U-Mong
Off Suthep Rd. A meaning of the temple's name is a temple in the cave. King Meng Rai built watU-Mong for a forest monk who wants to practice Buddhism and meditation in an isolated and peaceful area. Visitors can enjoy the ancient chedi, a forest surrounding, and an open zoo and may recognize those scenes from some Thai and holly wood movies.

Wat Ku Tao
The temple is in the township.The stupa was built in the year 1613 in the shape of five gourds to represent five Lord Buddhas.
Chiang Mai National Museun
The Museum is located colse to Wat Chedi Chet yot.It is small But well maintained.The Museum has many rare collections of buddha heads, images and artifacts from many periods. It also has collections of howdahs, coffin covers, displays of hill tribe custumers, northern-style household gadgets and two ancient kilns.

Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center
The center is on Wualai road in the southern part of the city. The center is a complex of northern style houses with comprehensive exhibitions of folk crafts and antiques.Also on show is a hill tribe village way of life.

Chiang Dao Cave
The cave is located in Chiang Dao district, about 72 kilometers north of the city of ChiangMai. This complex of interconnecting caves that cut into Doi Chang Dao is located 5Km west of route 107, about 70km north of chiang Mai,heading towards Tha Ton and Fang. The Caves arebelieved to stretch for many kilometres into the limestone rock,although only a small part of the complex is possible to explore.They contain many Buddha and hermit images.
